India's Supreme Court has granted bail to a prominent opposition leader of Delhi's governing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in a money laundering case.
The top court said Manish Sisodia's prolonged incarceration had "violated his right to a speedy trial".
Mr Sisodia has been in jail for more than 17 months in a case related to alleged irregularities in a now-scrapped liquor policy in the city.
He denies the corruption allegations and had challenged his arrest in court.
The court said the right to a quick trial was "sacrosanct" and that if the state or an agency failed to protect it "then bail cannot be opposed, saying the crime is serious".
The judges added that since Mr Sisodia's trial was unlikely to be completed soon, it would be a violation of his rights to keep him imprisoned indefinitely.
"Bail cannot be denied as a matter of punishment... It is high time the courts realise that bail is a rule and jail is an exception," they said.
One of India's most high-profile politicians, Mr Sisodia is second-in-command in the AAP.

Bhagwant Singh Mann said that India has won two consecutive medals in Tokyo and Paris after a gap of 52 years. Prior to this, the Indian Hockey squad had won two consecutive medals in 1968 at Mexico and 1972 at Munich.

The CM congratulated Manu Bhaker and her family for her rare achievement in the Ongoing Paris Olympics. He said that by bagging two medals in the shooting events at Paris Manu has made the entire country proud. Mann said the ace shooter has emerged as a youth icon who will always inspire the budding players for bringing laurels for the country in national and international events.

The functioning of the Delhi government hit by the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to be back on track if his former deputy Manish Sisodia is restored to his previous position even though the process will take time, officers and constitutional experts said on Friday. Sisodia held portfolios of 18 departments including education, finance, excise, health and PWD among others besides being deputy of Kejriwal before his resignation on February 28 last year.

Exercise or snack? Scientists spot brain chemical that helps make the decision

Researchers have identified the brain chemical as a key factor in decision-making between exercise and eating high-calorie food.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 80% of adolescents and 27% of adults don't get enough exercise. With obesity rates increasing worldwide, this study could help create strategies to combat this public health crisis, the researchers said.
Orexin appears central to making the decision between movement and eating," said Burdakov.
Mice with a functional orexin system spent more time running and less time at the milkshake bar than those with a blocked system.
However, when given just one option, both groups behaved similarly. This suggests that orexin mainly helps mice decide between exercising and eating when both choices are available.
The ETH researchers expect that orexin may also be responsible for this decision in humans since the brain functions involved here are known to be practically the same in both species.
They believe that interventions could be developed to help overcome exercise barriers in healthy individuals and those whose physical activity is limited.

Supreme Court's Judgment in MCD Alderman Case Contradicts Constitution Bench Precedents, Undermines Democracy

Amidst the escalating tensions between the Union and the GNCTD, the Supreme Court on August 5 delivered its judgment upholding the power of the LG to unilaterally nominate ten members(aldermen) to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi(MCD). The judgment, which was delivered nearly 15 months after it was reserved in May 2023, came as a surprise. While reserving the judgment on May 17, 2023, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who was heading the 3-judge bench, had expressed concerns about the LG exercising such unilateral powers, saying that by nominating members without the consent of the GNCTD, he can “destabilize the elected corporation” Nevertheless, the judgment held that the LG was not required to act as per the aid and advice of the Delhi Government while nominating members to the MCD. Notably, the judgment does not contain any discussion on the concerns raised by the bench during the hearing.

Californium has no known biological role. It is toxic due to its radioactivity.
