https://x.com/DoctorAjayita/status/1813045255228563766India’s household debt has reached a record high of 39.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, according to an analysis by Motilal Oswal.

This is higher than the previous peak of 38.6% in the fourth quarter of FY21. This increase, estimated at 16.5% year-on-year in Q3FY24, is mainly driven by faster growth in non-housing debt, the report said.

In addition, net financial savings appear to have dropped to their lowest, at 5% of the GDP, The Financial Express had reported in September 2023, citing Reserve Bank of India data.

In contrast, corporate debt increased marginally.

Corporate borrowings have risen by just 6.1% year-on-year in Q3FY24, easing to a 15-year low of 42.7% of GDP, the newspaper reported.

While it is being suggested that higher leveraging is due to home loans, it’s actually non-housing debt that is increasing at a faster pace. Non-housing debt comprises 72% of the total household debt.

In the December, 2023 quarter, for instance, the non-housing debt increased by 18.3% y-o-y, housing loans went up by 12.2%.

I attempted to find out just how many cases filed in the Supreme Court were marked as "important and sensitive" by the Registrar (J-I), as required by the 2017 SC Handbook on Practice and Procedure. Gave them another option---I requested that I be allowed to inspect the files under 2(1)(j) of the RTI Act. All this is fortified by past CIC orders and court judgments. Yet, the Appellate Officer rejected the RTI appeal, without any proper reasoning. The only reasoning was his view that the CPIO was correct. The incident again highlights the fact that apex court's administrative functioning is highly, highly opaque. Lawyers seem to be okay with this for some reason, finding no time to press for more transparency in the court's functioning.

The Education Ministry has stopped funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the flagship school education programme, to Delhi, Punjab and West Bengal because of their reluctance to participate in the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) scheme, The Indian Express has learnt.

The scheme, with a budget of over Rs 27,000 crore for the next five years — the Centre is supposed to shoulder 60% of the financial burden and the states 40% — aims to upgrade at least 14,500 government schools into “exemplar” institutions to showcase the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. States have to confirm their participation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Education Ministry.

Six children in Gujarat have died of suspected Chandipura viral infection since July 10, taking the total number of cases to 12 so far, state Health Minister Rushikesh Patel informed. Samples from all the victims have been sent to Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation.

The Chandipura virus typically causes fever with flu-like symptoms and can lead to acute encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted through vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and sand flies.
