The report highlighted the crackdown on dissent in India citing a growing number of writers, journalists, academics and other critics of the government being subjected to legal harassment in the form of arbitrary arrests and prolonged detentions without trial. 

The writers’ body expressed concern over “how the country’s legal system has been increasingly weaponised to suppress peaceful expression, particularly when it relates to criticism of the government of India or its policies,” in the context of the right to freedom of expression (Article 19 of the ICCPR). 

In its statement, the association said that many of the issues highlighted by PEN International were brought up by committee members but the Indian delegation “failed to to substantively engage with many of the concerns raised regarding undue restrictions on the right to freedom of expression.”

The survey found that people between 21 and 30 are the most stressed set of workers, followed by those in their 30s and 40s, and then those in the age group of 41-50 years, the survey added.

The critical stressors identified include fear of judgment, lack of work-life balance, and feelings of under-recognition, according to the analysis among over 5,000 employees working in various sectors, including IT and manufacturing, transportation, staff and recruiting, tech and media, and finance and education.

Two Nasa astronauts from Boeing’s troubled Starliner capsule may have to remain in space until the middle of August as engineers continue to work through technical problems that prevented their return in June.

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have been onboard the International Space Station (ISS) since 6 June after the first crewed docking of the next-generation spacecraft. The test mission was scheduled to last about a week, but Starliner’s undocking was delayed several times as faulty thrusters and then a series of small helium leaks raised safety concerns.

Despite being stranded in space due to technical issues with their Boeing Starliner for over a month, Indian-origin American astronaut Sunita Williams (58) and fellow US astronaut Barry Eugene ‘Butch’ Wilmore (61) remain optimistic that the spacecraft will bring them back home.

In a live conference on 10 July, which the two astronauts joined from the International Space Station (ISS), Sunita Williams said, “I have a real good feeling in my heart that this spacecraft will bring us home, no problem.” Echoing her sentiment, Butch added, “Failure is not an option.”
