Centre ignored Delhi because people elected AAP govt: Sanjay Singh

Earlier in the morning, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh while speaking to media, said, "In the last 10 years, crores of Indians are suffering from inflation. Everyone will see what is done to curtail inflation. Farmers have been demanding MSP for a long time now... NDA allies are also demanding to revoke the Agniveer Scheme... Employment, MSP, and inflation will be the major areas where the main focus will be... I can leak the budget of Delhi now. For the last 9 years, Delhi has not been receiving more than Rs 325 crores for the sole reason that the people of Delhi elected AAP..."

Earlier in May, the court had summoned Atishi to appear before it over her claims that the BJP had tried to topple the AAP government by contacting 21 of its MLAs and offering each of them Rs 25 crore to switch sides.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was also an accused in the case, had not been summoned by the court. No prima facie case was made against Kejriwal to issue summons to him, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Tanya Bamniyal had said earlier.

Cough syrup samples collected from more than 100 pharma units in the country have failed quality tests, according to a govt report, which highlights that some had the same toxins that were found in the #cough #syrups linked to deaths of children in Gambia, Uzbekistan & Cameroon.

According to the report, the failures related to DEG/EG were attributed to an “unsecured supply chain and failure to test the propylene glycol bulk for DEG/EG, among others.”

Following reports that connected India-produced cough syrups to 141 child deaths globally, various laboratories, both government-run and private, across the country have been performing tests.

The report, presented to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, found that out of 7,087 batches tested, 353 were deemed NSQ. Nine batches were particularly problematic due to the presence of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.

A recent report questioning the fairness of Lok Sabha 2024 elections highlighted that the cumulative hike of 4.65 crore votes from initial turnout figures to final turnout figures translated into 79 seats for the BJP-led NDA across 15 states.

The report alleged that the unprecedented vote percentage increase translated into 79 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance across the country. This included 18 seats in Odisha, 11 in Maharashtra, 10 in West Bengal, 7 in Andhra Pradesh, 6 in Karnataka, 5 each in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, 3 each in Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, 2 in Assam and 1 each in Arunachal Pradesh Gujarat and Kerala.

Sebastian Morris, retired professor at IIM Ahmedabad and a member of Independent Panel For Monitoring India’s Elections, said, “In these 79 constituencies, the winning margin is very low in comparison to the increase in votes. The pattern in these seats say that the difference is too large, the change comes after a long time and it is seen in the constituencies which saw tough fights. I think there is a very strong bias which is revealed here.”

A Delhi court on Tuesday granted bail to Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi in a defamation case filed against her by BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor. The court further directed her to furnish bail bonds worth ₹20,000.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh says, "Arvind Kejriwal's sugar level has dropped below 50 for 36 times now... You are playing with the life of Delhi's elected CM... It shows that the case is not limited to his arrest, it is a deep-rooted conspiracy to kill Arvind Kejriwal."

In the context of the economic realities of high levels of unemployment, high food inflation rate, unprecedented widening of inequalities and the slowing down of private investment, the budget should have focused on expanding economic activities. Instead, its proposals are contractionary and regressive. This will only impose further miseries on the people and depress the levels of investment and employment generation.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema criticizes the Union Budget for neglecting Punjab's demands including a crop diversification package, accusing the Centre of step-motherly treatment.

Chandigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday said the Union Budget, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, "completely disappointed" the state and he slammed the BJP-led Centre for not considering any of its demands including a package for crop diversification.

Cheema further accused the Union government of meting out step-motherly treatment to the border state.

Sitharaman presented the Budget for 2024-25, her seventh straight presentation, surpassing the record of former prime minister Morarji Desai. This was the first budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's third term in office.

Reacting to the Union Budget, Cheema said, "The Centre meted out step-motherly treatment to the people of Punjab and farmers. The BJP-led government deceived the people of Punjab."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader claimed that the Centre reduced the subsidy on fertilisers by 36 per cent.

"The government has been claiming to double the income of farmers. But instead of doubling the income, it has rather raised the input cost of farmers," said Cheema.

He claimed that the Centre did not give anything to Punjab for roads, health and education in the Union Budget.

"This Budget has completely disappointed Punjab," he stated.

Referring to his pre-Budget meetings with Sitharaman, Cheema said he had submitted that Punjab needed an economic package for crop diversification so that the farmers could be encouraged to grow alternate crops and also save the depleting underground water table.

"But the Centre ignored it," he said.

He further said the state also needed a package for boosting industrialisation on the lines of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

"The Centre always seeks to know the priorities of the states during pre-Budget meetings. But the Centre has disappointed Punjab," he said.

"The BJP always discriminates against Punjab and takes anti-Punjab decisions. Today's Budget is anti-Punjab and anti-farmers," he alleged.

Cheema lashed out at the Centre for not giving any incentive for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).

Finance Minister Atishi on Tuesday said despite paying Rs 2.32 lakh crore in taxes to the BJP-led Centre, the national capital has not even got a single penny as its share in central taxes in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha. Addressing a press conference here, Atishi said Delhi had demanded a budgetary allocation for the MCD but it did not get even a single rupee from the Centre.

Personal income tax collections continue to outpace corporate tax collections, with cumulative net direct tax collections having grown by nearly 20 per cent to Rs 5.74 lakh crore during the April 1-July 11 period of the ongoing financial year (2024-25), the Income Tax Department said in a statement late Friday. Personal income tax collections have continued be higher than corporate tax collections, with Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections more than doubling to Rs 16,634 crore in FY25.

Direct taxes essentially comprise personal income tax and corporate tax. STT collections, which get counted in overall personal income tax collections, have surged on account of a sharp increase in stock market trading activity. During April 1-July 11 in FY24, STT collections had stood at Rs 7,285 crore.

Personal income tax collections have risen more than corporate tax collections for the last two financial years. Personal income tax collections accounted for 60 per cent of the total net direct tax collected so far in this fiscal, the data showed.

The 2024 budget has increased the securities transaction tax (STT) on Futures & Options (F&O) of securities to 0.02 percent and 0.1 percent respectively and income receipts from share buybacks would be taxed in the hands of beneficiaries.
