Haryana sports minister Anil Vij has scripted a new controversy with the opposition questioning his donation of ₹ 50 lakh in state funds to the rich Dera Sacha Sauda sect headed by self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

"The Opposition's work is to oppose, what can I say about it," said the minister, who made the donation from a discretionary fund after witnessing a sport called the Tiranga Rumaal Chu at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa over the weekend.

So impressed was Mr Vij that he immediately announced the donation to promote games like kabaddi, kho-kho and wrestling; the Dera's Tiranga Rumaal Chu was a combination of three sports said the minister, optimistic that the funds would help in training players for the next Olympics.

Reliance on imports could have a chilling effect on the pharmaceutical industry, weakening its ability to remain relevant. Ensuring the affordability of pharmaceuticals is essential for controlling healthcare costs, especially in India, where out-of-pocket health expenditures accounted for nearly 47.1% of the total health expenditure in 2021. While the Drugs Price Control Order, 2013, aims to regulate the prices of existing medicines, a better option is to establish a competitive environment for critical medicines by promoting local production. However, the government has taken two initiatives to meet domestic requirements through imports, which could have a chilling effect on the domestic industry.

The first was a Department of Expenditure (DoE) order permitting the Ministry of Health to procure 120 medicines through global tenders to supply Union government schemes. This list includes several top-selling anti-diabetes medicines and anti-cancer drugs. Currently, the companies selling these medicines enjoy a market monopoly in India, largely due to patent protection, regulatory barriers, or both. Moreover, for over 40 of these 120 medicines, the DoE order specifies a specific brand to be procured, implying that monopoly control of foreign companies would be enhanced.

“We have conducted meetings with several political parties and leaders. We met Chandrababu Naidu and he said we will oppose this bill, we met Nitish Kumar yesterday he also assured us and said they will oppose the bill. We also met Tejashwi Yadav and he said they will oppose the bill. Uddhav Thackeray’s statement has come that we will not allow the government to touch the Waqf. Similarly, a statement has come from the Tamil Nadu chief minister as well. Other secular parties and NDA allies have also assured us that they will oppose the bill,” said Rahmani.

The Bill seeks to enhance the efficiency of the administration and management of waqf properties and ensure that the inheritance rights of women are not denied. It crucially omits section 40, which relates to the powers of waqf boards to decide if a property is a waqf property. It also makes the district collector the arbitrator in determining whether a government property is a waqf property.

It seeks to change the composition of the Central Waqf Council and the state waqf boards, and ensure the representation of Muslim women and include non-Muslims. It also provides for the establishment of a separate ‘Board of Auqaf’ for Boharas and Aghakhanis.

A brutal reality for women in India The New York Times

The Supreme Court of India this week took up the case of the ghastly rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a Kolkata hospital earlier this month. The case has convulsed the nation and led to doctor strikes and large street protests. The police have arrested a 33-year-old man who was a volunteer at a police post at the hospital. Three senior officials there were removed from their posts.

Context: India, by many measures, remains one of the world’s most unsafe places for women. Rape and domestic violence are relatively common, and conviction rates are low. The case of the trainee doctor comes 12 years after a physiotherapy student died after being gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi, leading to national outrage.

NASA said Thursday it will decide this weekend whether Boeing’s new capsule is safe enough to return two astronauts from the International Space Station, where they’ve been waiting since June.

Administrator Bill Nelson and other top officials will meet Saturday. An announcement is expected from Houston once the meeting ends.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner on June 5. The test flight quickly encountered thruster failures and helium leaks so serious that NASA kept the capsule parked at the station as engineers debated what to do.

SpaceX could retrieve the astronauts, but that would keep them up there until next February. They were supposed to return after a week or so at the station.

MP Jairam Ramesh said that dams on the Teesta river, along which the hydropower project that was damaged yesterday is located, were the “prime example” of how the region’s ecology was being altered for the worse.

IMPORTANT MEDICAL NEWS

Physical activity is important for overall health and wellbeing, including in young populations. According to WHO, children and adolescents aged 5–17 years should accumulate a minimum of 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.

However, children and adolescents increasingly show high levels of physical inactivity, defined as physical activity not meeting the WHO recommended levels. Worldwide data from 1·6 million adolescent students (aged 11–17 years) in 2016 showed that less than a fifth met WHO recommended physical activity levels.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a further decline in physical activity levels due to social isolation policies.

Physical inactivity has been found to further increase as children enter adolescence, with physical activity levels reducing at an average rate of 7% per year between the ages of 10 years and 19 years.

Physical inactivity can have serious consequences on the physical and mental health of young children that can extend into adulthood.

Due to its close association with non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancers, physical inactivity has been estimated to contribute to approximately 10% of global mortality.

Physical inactivity is also associated with obesity,

and has been linked to the accelerating global prevalence of childhood obesity since the 1980s.
