    "The truth should be met in the eyes. Instead, we have a constant stream of statements about defence spending designed to deceive the larger public, to convey an impression of an impenetrable national security that is adequately resourced by the Modi govt".
    The govt's press release on defence spending was faithfully parroted by most mainstream publication. A simple examination of the claim would have revealed the truth that was being obscured by facts.
    Another claim which was left unexamined. But when Chinese ingress in Ladakh and violence in Manipur can be ignored, to expect that a lens would be brought to the reality of defence spending is far-fetched.
    How much do the defence services need? And how much are they getting? The shortfalls add up every year and the result is visible in the equipping state of the three services. A kurta-pajama in mess or obnoxious snub by a minister will make up for the shortfalls. Look at Ladakh.
