About 2,400 slum dwellers who paid the state government’s Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and its predecessor—under Congress and Aam Aadmi (AAP) party schemes—for new houses haven’t received them, for up to a decade and a half in some cases. Since 2020, a bureaucratic tussle between Delhi’s AAP and the union government, run by the BJP, both trying to allot the same houses, has left over 9,000 houses unoccupied. The residents of 22 slums in Delhi continue to live in precarious conditions, unsure where and when they will be relocated.

Steady increase in Total Liabilities to Assets Ratio since 2000

The analysis of RBI data reveals a consistent annual increase in both household financial assets and liabilities when measured at current prices. In 2000-01, the total value of household assets stood at ₹2.3 lakh crore, while total liabilities were ₹0.3 lakh crore, approximately 13% of the total assets. By 2004-05, total assets had risen to ₹4.5 lakh crore, and liabilities to ₹1.2 lakh crore, with the liabilities-to-assets ratio increasing to about 26%. This ratio decreased to 20% by 2009-10 but climbed again to 29% by 2014-15, 33% by 2019-20, 34% by 2021-22, and reached 52% by 2022-23.

Ratan Tata was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, during the British Raj, into a Parsi Zoroastrian family, on 28 December 1937.^[8] He was the son of Naval Tata, who was born in Surat and later adopted into the Tata family, and Sooni Tata, the niece of Tata group founder Jamsetji Tata. Tata's biological grandfather, Hormusji Tata, was a member of the Tata family by blood. In 1948, when Tata was 10, his parents separated, and he was subsequently raised and adopted by Navajbai Tata, his grandmother and widow of Ratanji Tata.^[9] He had a younger brother Jimmy Tata^[10] and a half-brother, Noel Tata, from Naval Tata's second marriage with Simone Tata, with whom he was raised.^{[citation needed]}

Tata studied at the Campion School, Mumbai till the 8th class. After which, he studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and the Riverdale Country School in New York City, which he graduated from in 1955.^[11][12][13] After graduating from high school, Tata enrolled in Cornell University, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1959. While at Cornell, Tata became a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. In 2008, Tata gifted Cornell $50 million, becoming the largest international donor in the university's history.

During the 21 years Tata led the Tata Group, revenues grew over 40 times, and profit over 50 times.^[15] When he took over the company, sales overwhelmingly comprised commodity sales, but at the end of his tenure, the majority of sales came from brands.^[19][20] He had Tata Tea acquire Tetley, Tata Motors acquire Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel acquire Corus. These acquisitions repositioned Tata from a largely India-centric group into a global business, with over 65% of revenues coming from operations and sales internationally.

Tata never married and had no children. In 2011, Ratan Tata stated, "I came close to getting married four times and each time I backed off in fear or for one reason or another.

He was in a critical condition and was under intensive care at a Mumbai hospital. Tata had said on 7 October 2024 that he was undergoing routine medical investigations due to his age and related medical conditions.
