How the govts are scuttling the RTI Act. Don’t appoint Information Commissioners Appoint only govt acolytes who don’t want transparency Regressive amendments to RTI Act like blocking corruption info by protecting it as personal info Protecting goons who attack RTI activists.
The DPDP Act amended section 8(1)(j) to expand its purview and exempt all personal information from the ambit of the RTI Act. It also deleted a key provision in the law, which gave citizens a right to information at par with Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies.
Defunct in some states and operations inefficient elsewhere, the insincerity in implementation of the RTI Act is laid bare.
On October 12, marking the 16th anniversary of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Satark Nagrik Sangathan, a citizens’ collective, put out a revealing report on how a pathbreaking governance reform is being stalled. The Sangthan’s study shows that even as the RTI Act obligates each Information Commission (IC) to prepare an annual report on the implementation of the law, which is to be tabled in Parliament or a state legislature, an overwhelming 21 of the 29 IC panels have not published their annual report for 2019-20. In a section on the transparency in the working of IC panels, the report states that their functioning is dismal.

Narendra Modi has again lowered the dignity of the post of Prime Minister of India
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has claimed that Narendra Modi introduced him to Gautam Adani 'as a middleman' and invited representatives of the Kenyan government to Gujarat to see various Adani projects there. It has been proved once again that Narendra Modi is the 'Pradhan Sevak' of Adani and not of the people of India. Former Kenyan PM Raila Odinga, has admitted his links to the scam tainted Adani Group and revealed that he was introduced to fraud Gautam Adani by Narendra Modi. Outrage across Kenya as #RailaOdinga defended the Adani Group as a "reputable firm"!

It’s been over eight years since the launch of MUDRA, and recently, NITI Aayog released a report titled ‘Impact Assessment of PMMY’, shedding light on the scheme’s performance and its influence on micro-entrepreneurs. Data indicates that the share of accounts under the Shishu category dropped to its lowest in 2023-24, comprising just 62% of total beneficiary accounts, down from 93% in 2015-16. A fortnight ago, an alleged land mafia in Nawada district attacked and set fire to a Dalit hamlet and more than 30 houses in Bihar. All the houses that were set on fire belonged to people from Scheduled Castes (SC). Cases have been filed under various sections of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and other relevant laws.
According to police investigation, 21 houses were completely burnt. They belonged to SCs from the Manjhi and Ravidas communities. Reports also said that the fire destroyed the utensils, clothes, cots, grains and, in some cases, farm animals of the majority of the households. The government has provided food and temporary shelter for the victims.
Dalit and tribal students are charged these fees when they seek admission under the general category, having qualified for this category through good scores.
India’s farm output subsidies that guarantee the government purchase of rice and wheat at prices higher than market rates are contributing substantially to the country’s declining groundwater reserves and threaten long-term sustainable agriculture, researchers have cautioned.
Their study has estimated that output subsidies have led to a 30 per cent overproduction of rice and wheat — both water-intensive crops — and excess groundwater extraction that some environmental scientists fear could push India’s grain-basket states towards desertification.

‘161 Applications Received for 8 Vacant Information Commissioner Posts at CIC’: RTI At present the CIC is staffed with only the chief information commissioner and two ICs against the sanctioned strength of 10 commissioners. “It is extremely worrying that for several months the CIC has been functioning at a reduced capacity. This negates the very purpose of the RTI Act, which is to ensure time-bound access to information,”
As the RSS inches towards its 100th year, Bhagwat and his co-sanghchalaks realise that the organisation has failed to capture national imagination and admiration.
One has to wonder what the Union Home Ministry and other custodians of national security would make of Bhagwat’s alarming understanding of our internal landscape: “Today, Punjab, Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh on the north-western border of the country; Keral and Tamil Nadu on the sea border; and the entire Purvanchal from Bihar to Manipur are disturbed.”
After being released, the accused had offered pooja in the Kalika temple in Vijaypura town and were later garlanded by Sangh parivar and Shri Ram Sene members.
“Today is Vijayadasami, a significant day for us. We welcomed Parashuram Waghmore and Manohar Yadve, who have been unfairly jailed for six years on charges related to the murder of Gauri Lankesh. The real culprits have yet to be found, but these men were targeted simply because they are pro-Hindu workers. Their families have suffered, and this injustice needs serious introspection”, said a Hindutva leader, reported India Today.

MEDICINE & WELNESS
Population and animal studies suggested it could treat cancer, but the clinical trials were a bust. Here’s what happened and what potential may remain.
It’s a fair question: Metformin, commonly used to treat diabetes, has been investigated for treating a range of cancer types in thousands of studies on laboratory cells, animals and people. But Goodwin, an epidemiologist and medical oncologist treating breast cancer at the University of Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, advises against it.
ENVIRONMENT
Water, Trees, People: Sadhana Forest is a unique satellite forest community.
The original vision of its founders, Yorit and Aviram Rozin, was to transform 70 acres of severely eroded, arid land on the outskirts of Auroville. In a spirit of human unity, their aim has been to introduce a growing number of people to sustainable living, food security through ecological transformation, wasteland reclamation, and veganism. Our energy and resources have been focused on the creation of a vibrant, indigenous Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF).
This is a community focused on water conservation and the indigenous reforestation of severely eroded Auroville land located inland from Morattandi, off the Pondicherry-Tindivanam road.
