🔸On 6 July 2020, a bench headed by Justice Mishra reversed a Delhi High Court order asking the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to produce its records on why activist #GautamNavlakha (charged under the draconian UAPA) was being sent from Delhi to Mumbai with 'inexplicable, frantic hurry. Instead of following the high court order, the NIA-headed by Y.C. Modi, the man who had investigated the Haren Pandya case went to the #SupremeCourtofIndia.

The bench also expunged the remarks made against the NIA. Navlakha, an author, remained in jail.

On 22 February 2020, at an event where #Modi was present, Justice Arun Mishra praised #Modi.

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) claims to promote “dignity, freedom, equality, and justice.” But across 7 sections, 83 pages, dozens of case studies, and 543 footnotes, our report tells a different story. Here are 10 key takeaways.

1. HAF sought to make Hindutva palatable to civil society, insisting it was independent of more unsavory organizations like the HSS and VHP-A. But HAF retained covert ties with these orgs and their leaders through shared personnel, financial ties, and regular coordination.

2. HAF took advantage of an opening. Many civil rights spaces wanted to build broader representation, and were sometimes unaware of the nuanced internal politics of our community, or of HAF's material and ideological ties to Hindu supremacy. So they welcomed HAF in.

3. With time, HAF’s mask has begun to slip. This is in no small part because its very understanding of civil rights has been baldly zero-sum, where the civil rights and religious freedoms of Hindus are framed in opposition to, and at the expense of, those of other communities.

4. Take the example of caste, where HAF has furiously fought to censor the mention of caste in school textbooks, and opposed adding legal protections against caste discrimination by emulating white supremacist tactics. Case in point: its chosen bogey of “critical caste theory.”

5. As recent reporting in @sacbee_news demonstrated, HAF has treated other South Asian religious communities as adversaries. Its recent calls for Sikhs and their gurdwaras to be surveilled is in keeping with a long history of bigotry that our report carefully documents.

6. As is true with most Hindu supremacists, Muslims have been a special target. From its leaders whitewashing the 2002 Gujarat pogroms, working closely with the likes of the Middle East Forum, or attacking Muslim civil society groups, HAF’s record makes for unpleasant reading.

7. As @mukta_jo’s recent Al Jazeera piece attests to, HAF also tied itself closely to the Modi regime, repeatedly attempting to justify the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) numerous human rights violations, and spending significant resources to attack the regime’s critics.

8. All these examples ran in stark contrast to its initial claims to be “progressive.” Now, HAF seems to have abandoned them entirely, to the extent that it has started to argue that Hindus are threatened less by racism/xenophobia and more by Muslims, Sikhs, Dalits and the left.

9. HAF’s hard shift further to the Right serves to undermine the collective solidarity of communities of color and build an emergent multiracial Far Right – something borne out by its proximity to Christian Zionists, MAGA acolytes like Vivek Ramaswamy, and “anti-woke” activists.

10. Where does this leave us?Hindu supremacists have found their natural ideological allies.But will the pro-democracy world offer them space? Our report is clear: to do so would be a costly misreading, and fundamentally incompatible with the path to a just multiracial democracy.
