NEWS THAT MATTERS

[14] Rural schools fill India's labour force! (In 2018, 13,500 villages didn't have a school). Lack of quality education in rural schools leads to skillset problems in the Indian workforce means the people who work are devoid of good education. https://indiatoday.in/india/story/la

ck-of-quality-education-in-rural-schools-leading-to-skillset-problems-in-indian-workforce-2323768-2023-01-19School education forms the backbone of India’s labour force. Eighty-six per cent of India’s labour force comprises those with education till Class 12 or below, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy’s September-December 2022 report. This implies that a major portion of the workforce carries out their livelihood on the basis of the skills learnt from school.

There are 14.89 lakh schools in India, according to the Ministry of Education. Of these, only 2.54 lakh schools are in urban areas. The remaining 12.34 lakh are in rural areas. Roughly 13.79 crore boys and 12.73 crore girls study in these schools. Many of these students abandon education at different levels and a portion of them join the workforce.

[17] Maharashtra accounts for nearly 12% of India's net sown area and contributes around 8% of India's agricultural gross value added (GVA). About 74% of Marathwada’s population depends on agriculture and allied activities, due to poor industrialisation.

Technically, the dam's command area spreads across five districts in Marathwada--Parbani, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Nanded and Beed. Built on the Godavari river starting 1965, the dam has an irrigation potential of 1,83,322 hectares. Though the government has built canals from the dams to many villages in the command area, these canals are now silted over and filled with vegetation since there is no regular flow of water, and no proper maintenance.

"Why are some Indian leaders not happy with the country’s apparent success in bringing population growth under control, and why are they actively trying to incentivise Indians to have more children?"

But many of the country’s leaders don’t seem pleased with this state of affairs.

Chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, two progressive and relatively prosperous states in the south of the country, have been calling on their constituents to have more children. The central government, led by Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, appears hellbent on parliamentary reforms that would reduce the representation of states that managed to curtail their population growth while awarding states that continue to grow with more seats.

If all this appears illogical, it’s worth remembering that what makes short-term sense politically often does not make sense in any other way.

For the world’s most populous country, with a population over 1.45 billion, this should be an occasion for celebration, especially given its overburdened infrastructure and scarcity of resources.
