POST INDEPENDENCE
● After independence, the Sunni Majlis Auqaf became the Delhi Waqf Board (DWB)
● The 123 properties continued to be used for religious purposes
● 1970: The Government of India officially notified these 123 as Waqf properties under the Waqf Act, 1954 in the Delhi Gazette
● But the Delhi Development Authority and Land & Development Office challenged this, claiming ownership
GOVT COMMITTEES & RECOMMENDATIONS
● 1974: Smt Indira Gandhi’s govt formed the Burney Committee to resolve this dispute
● 1976: Burney Committee confirmed that 123 properties are Waqf properties
BUT It made two recommendations:

➔ While ownership stays with the Government
VHP INTERVENES
