Fake pilots, fake missiles, fake news: How Pak weaponised disinformation against India Underplaying aggression, claiming victimhood, and sowing seeds of disunity are parts of an old Pakistani playbook. It has now been repurposed for the age of AI.
Within hours of India’s airstrikes in response to Pakistani aggression in the early hours of Saturday, several Pakistani social media handles began claiming that Indian Air Force pilot Shivangi Singh, India’s only woman Rafale pilot, had been captured in Pakistan. Her photos and random old videos were posted with captions declaring she had been detained in Sialkot or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The story was entirely fake – debunked promptly by both the Indian Air Force and PIB Fact Check. But the lie spread far and fast, amplified by accounts with large followings, some masquerading as Indian users to appear more credible.

Modi’s statement was a departure from what US President Donald Trump and US secretary of state Marco Rubio had said – that talks would take place between India and Pakistan “at a neutral location” following the ceasefire announcement.
The iDEX initiative of the govt, bringing together start-ups, innovators, R&D institutions and academia, has helped create systems like SkyStriker that served well during Operation Sindoor. A prominent defence innovation example used in Operation Sindoor was SkyStriker Loitering Munitions, which are suicide drones developed by Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies. This precision-striking drone was used in covert operations, given its low noise. It could carry a 5-10 kg warhead and has a range of 100 km. It was not just about the offensive, drone innovations were crucial in playing defence too. For instance, the D-4 anti-drone system developed by the DRDO was instrumental in neutralising hostile drones by disrupting GPS signals. Indigenously developed innovations were also used for other purposes, such as surveillance and unmanned systems.
