India’s strategy of lowering corporate tax rates to spur private investment and job creation cost the exchequer nearly Rs 99,000 crore in foregone revenue during 2023-24, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told Parliament on Tuesday. Responding to a written question from Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha in the Rajya Sabha, Chaudhary shared year-wise data showing a consistent revenue sacrifice since the rollout of reduced tax rates and phased-out exemptions.
    Revenue foregone under corporate tax deductions stood at Rs 98,999 crore in FY24, up from Rs 88,109 crore in FY23. The figure was Rs 96,892 crore in FY22 and Rs 75,218 crore in FY21. In FY20, when the corporate tax overhaul was introduced, the loss was Rs 8,043 crore. Data for FY25 is not yet available, Chaudhary said.
    India’s corporate tax regime has seen multiple changes since 2016. The Finance Act that year reduced rates to 29 per cent, followed by a 2017 cut to 25 per cent for domestic firms with turnover up to Rs 50 crore to promote formalisation and growth.
