With just days remaining for a new cotton harvest the Modi government has decided to gift the Prime Minister’s and “India’s friend Do-land Trump” (Donald Trump) our cotton farmers. Apparently, under the US’s pressure of 50% tariffs, India has decided to remove 10% import duty on cotton from 19th August to September 30th 2025. This import duty effectively increased the price of foreign grown cotton by 11%.
Interestingly, the elimination of the import duty comes within a fortnight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that India will never compromise on the interest of farmers.

At Chennai’s busiest railway station, one man has carried that burden for 36 years.
N. Selvaraj, affectionately known as “Central Body Murugan” has retrieved bodies from the tracks longer than most commuters have been alive. The station became his workplace, his refuge, and in many ways, his home.
He first came here as a runaway teenager. The job terrified him in the beginning, he couldn’t even step near the shattered remains.
Over time, he learned to carry the unimaginable. His early pay was just ₹8 shared among four men. Today, it hovers between ₹5,000–₹6,000 a month—barely enough for survival.
The hardest truth? His work has no official records. No acknowledgment in the files of the Railways, no line in government papers.
From stitching severed limbs to piecing together lives cut short, he does what few could. Even after a shoulder injury forced him to slow down, he still steps in when the younger men he trained cannot face the sight.
The crowds at Chennai Central may never notice him. But for 36 years, he has been the silent courage that allows the living to move on.
