Water Management in Delhi
City of Lakes: Project by Delhi Government
City of Lakes is an initiative by the Delhi Government to augment water supply through the creation of robust water reserves
Total Lakes/Water Bodies[1]
Delhi has 1045 Water bodies (including Lakes), according to Delhi Parks and Gardens Society NCT
65 water bodies are owned by Delhi Government
980 water bodies are directly/indirectly owned by Central Government**
Implementation - Phase 1
Target:
A total of 600 lakes and waterbodies are being rejuvenated, while developing robust decentralised water infrastructure
Achievement till June 2023
26 lakes (across 20 sites) and 381 smaller water bodies have been rejuvenated
Out of these, at least 11 sites have dedicated Walking tracks

The treatment of polluted water requires three — air, bacteria, and surface for bacterial growth
Aeration equipment are installed to maintain high dissolved oxygen levels in the water
The floated wetlands: a frugal innovative technology involves the plantation of wetland species such as Canna Indica and Cyperus papyrus. These plant species fix nitrogen and phosphorus, primary pollutants in wastewater.
Their roots grow in water and act as a medium for bacterial growth. This bacteria acts as an agent and fixes pollutants such as ammonia while consuming oxygen.

Why City of Lakes?
i. Main Objective: Sustainable Augmentation of Water Supply
Delhi currently relies on fixed water share of rivers from its neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh to fulfil its water requirements
With an ever-growing population and proportional increase in water demand, Delhi finds itself in a water deficit situation
Need of sustainable solution to this pertaining water problem led to Delhi City of lakes
ii. Local recreational spots for public
iii. Beautification of local area
